"In the crumbling throne-room of his palace, King Berenger has only the duration of the play to live. His kingdom has shrunk to the confines of his garden wall. Once, it seemed, he commanded the elements and great armies, once ruled over an immense empire; now he cannon command the movements of his own body. His ego refuses to accept the imminence of death, for he has lived for fourteen centuries - or five minutes. Marie, his second wife, tries to sooth him with her love, but Marguerite, his first wife reprimands her for it. This love, she says, blinded him, leaving him ignorant of life and unprepared for death. It is now Marguerite's part to teach him in a few moments what he has never faced before. Like Everyman, Berenger has lived from day to day, and there is now no more time."
